Education and Transportation

-education/schools before and during Ceausescu rule

-- Education was more or less standard before his rule but after the July Theses, Ceausescu increased Party education as well as mass political action. He intensified the political-ideological education for youth and even implemented large construction projects as part of the students' 'patriotic work,' essentially getting free labour from these able bodied young people. Propaganda rose to an ultimate high at this point during his rule, he was indoctrinating youth and student organizations, expanding political propaganda on radio, tv, theatres, cinemas and operas. The july these marked the beginning of a 'mini cultural revolution,' implementing strict guidelines of socialist realism and attacking non-compliant intellectuals.

Romanian and American relations

NATO Countries in blue, WARSAW countries in red.

-A little social studies for us all...

-NATO (North Atlantis Treaty Organization) was created as a mutual defence alliance so that if any of its countries became under attack, the rest would come to its aide. The WARSAW Pact was created for the exact reason but, obviously, with other countries in it.

-Because the USA was part of NATO and Romania was, originally, part of the WARSAW, they weren't necessarily the 'best of friends', and if it came down to it they would become enemies.

-The Soviets (Russians) were the obvious leaders for the WARSAW and kept military personnel in other countries and kept them running socialist governments, and the Americans for NATO. It could be looked at as Communism vs. Democracy.

- The 1980's began with an ever-worsening crisis between the east and west.  European cities were somewhat protected in 1983 with the development of intermediate-range ballistic missiles which were designed to ward off Soviet attacks. With the signing of the "Intermediate Nuclear Treaty" in 1987 the breakdown of the WARSAW Pact began and was over by 1991. NATO seemed to have overcome the challenge provided by the Communist bloc by the end of that decade.
